Day 6 Elton John – Step Into Christmas
Another classic Christmas song, I used to particularly love this when I was younger! It’s such a happy, feel-good song and it’s just an example of Elton at his best.
The middle eight breakdown is one of the most Christmassy parts of a song ever (the ‘la’s’ and the sleigh bells!)
Day 5 The Beach Boys – Little Saint Nick
This is an absolute classic and one I can’t fault at all. It’s so catchy, simple and Christmassy. It’s another one I’ve grown up listening to every Christmas but I’ve only fully appreciated what a fantastic song it is in the last few years. I love The Beach Boys with their dreamy harmonies and this is one of those songs that never fails to make me feel festive when out and about!
Day 4 Slade – Merry Xmas Everybody
Another classic Christmas tune! This is just awesome – a blend of glam rock with Christmas and one that always gets everybody on their feet. I like the fact this song was reportedly written by using lots of old discarded melodies and song ideas to create this belter of a tune.
Like the first two days of my Christmas playlist, this is another one I’ve heard every Christmas for as long as I can remember. It’s full of happiness and captures the Christmas spirit perfectly. It has perhaps the best sing-along chorus for a Christmas song ever written.
The ‘music video’ is also highly entertaining due to the drummer going slightly mental in the last minute…
And who hasn’t had a go at yelling “IT’S CHRISTMAAAAASSSSSSSSS!”? 😉
Day 3 George Michael – December Song
December Song is likely to be George Michael’s attempt to write a Christmas song he was proud of (he publicly shunned much of Wham’s material once he went solo, including ‘Last Christmas’). Not that releasing this was a necessity. ‘Last Christmas’ is a perfect Christmas track and one which is loved by many. But in 2008, this appeared as a free download on George’s website before he finally released it in 2009. Interestingly, this was apparently originally written with the Spice Girls in mind, followed by Michael Buble although George ended up keeping it for himself.
There’s no denying it’s not the most upbeat of Christmas songs, its melancholic tone and lack of instrumentation definitely ranks as perhaps one of the saddest Christmas songs ever but it’s a gorgeous song. The chords, the harmonies, the lyrics and the slight jazz tone to it makes it one of my firm favourites. The use of the sample from the Frank Sinatra track at the beginning is also genius. Christmas is a happy time but negative emotions/bad days don’t just willingly disappear over the Christmas period so we need songs like this in addition to the pop cheese blasted from the radios! The music video is a beautiful work of art too.
I just wish this had reached a top 5 position.
Underrated song by far.
So as you all know, today is the first day of advent where we all have the opportunity to dig out our chocolate advent calendars and allow ourselves to break the diet all the way up until/after Christmas.
As a massive fan of Christmas and Christmas music, I thought it would be fun to share with you some of my favourite Christmas songs between now and 2014. I will share a song each day with a reason why I love it!
So keep an eye out on here and on twitter and I will post some songs you’ll know and some more obscure ones. Who knows, I might even be able to introduce you to some new Christmas tunes 😉
DAY 1 Wizzard – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday
Ah, such a feel-good song and one that I’ve heard over and over again since I was very young. These days barely any original Christmas songs are released and if they are, they rarely chart which is sad. Songs like this really capture the spirit of Christmas and it never fails to bring a smile to my face! And Roy Wood’s beard is extremely impressive.
